Creating an Organized Space for Your Kids to Play
Creating an Organized Space for Your Kids to Play
If you have a child or multiple, than you know what it’s like to have toys taking over your home. For many parents, having a dedicated, organized space for your kids to play seem’s pointless. They’re just going to mess it up again so why bother? While that may be true, giving your kids a space of their own in your home full of their own items and freedom to play how they want. It’s also a great opportunity to teach your children how to care and clean up after themselves in a space that is their own. The key to great playroom organization is strategy, creativity and of course fun.
Here are some of the top playroom organizing ideas to keep your child’s playroom clutter free:
1. Sort Out Any Old or Broken Toys
The first step to organizing a playroom is to sort out the toy inventory. Go through on your own and throw away any broken toys or games that are missing pieces. After you’ve cleared that away, invite your kids in to go through and declutter toys they no longer play with or have outgrown. Consider donating any toys that are in good condition to a local toy drive or organization that provides toys to kids in need.
2. Use Clear Bins for Organizing
One of the best solutions to playroom storage is to use see-through containers. Instead of your child pulling out toy after toy trying to find the one they want, they can see the contents of the bin without having to dump them all out. Don’t bother with the lids as little hands won’t be able to take them off.
3. Have a Plan for Storing Small Pieces
Small toys should be separated from the larger toys and given their own dedicated bins. If you child is into Legos, have a bin set aside just for them. When it’s time to clean up they can easily scoop and dump the pieces in.
4. Choose Kid-Friendly Playroom Storage
While taller storage cabinets save you floor space, they also prevent your kids from being able to access and clean up toys on their own. When picking out your playroom storage stick with short, open shelf pieces that are easy for the little ones to reach. Remember, you should always anchor any free-standing furniture to the walls for safety.
5. Store the Messy Toys Out of Reach
Accessible playroom storage is important for some toys, but other toys like markers, paint, glitter and glue should be stored out of your child’s reach, unless of course you want to clean glitter off your floors for a few days. To prevent disastrous playroom messes, keep the arts and crafts supplies up where only you can reach.
6. Use Playroom Mats to Protect Your Floors
If you notice your child’s toys are leaving marks on your hardwood floor, or somehow leaving stains on your carpet you may want to consider using playroom mats. Playroom mats are a great way to protect your flooring from any wear and tear during play time.
At the end of the day, organizing a playroom can only do so much. Making a point to teach your kids clean up habits is really the ultimate way to keep their spaces clutter free for the long run. Whether you make it a routine or make it into a game if you make sure to clean up after each playtime it will become second nature to them.
