Building a Mudroom Yourself

No one likes tripping over a disorganized pile of shoes when they walk in the door after a long day, and the solution is simple – get organized with a mudroom.

A mudroom is a collection point for shoes, jackets, backpacks, purses, sporting equipment and plenty of other random objects that need a place to call home. The key to building a mudroom is to make the space organized and functional.

From selecting where your room should be, to all the must-have design elements, here’s your guide on how to build a mudroom.

How to Build a Mudroom

Locate Where Your Mudroom Should Go

This is the first step in the design process, and arguably the most important one. If you are lacking space near the entrance you use the most, you can add mudroom items to your existing laundry room, hallway, under the stairs or even a small corner. You can customize and design your room to fit the space you have to work with, just be sure to put it in a spot that isn’t too out of the way and won’t be used.

Must-Have Mudroom Design Elements

After you’ve selected the location for your mudroom, it’s time to start thinking about design elements you want to fill the space.

Tip: Once you decide what exactly you will be storing in your mudroom, “Take that list and note what type of storage these items will need; hangers, open baskets, see through containers with lids, cubbies etc.” Marina explains.

Popular Mudroom Design Items

  • Cubbies
  • Storage Benches
  • Shelving
  • Coat Hooks
  • Baskets
  • Lockers
  • Easy-to-Clean Floors
  • Storage Bins

Make sure you also plan for sturdy seating. Add benches at the base of storage cubbies with baskets underneath for easy shoe storage to keep walkways clear of clutter.

Add Extras That Work For You

Once you have figured out the main must-haves for your space, make sure that you save some room to customize the mudroom to exactly what you need. If you have a dog, you might want to add a washing station to your mudroom with a hose.

If cubbies leave too much out in the open for your taste, opt for lockers or cabinets instead. This gives you an easy way to hide clutter, especially if you have guests coming over.

A message board is a perfect way to customize your mudroom and stay organized. From coordinating schedules to lists of chores, this is a functional and personal decoration.
