Taking on a Roofing Project? Learn What Size Dumpster You’ll Need Here!
The Right Size Dumpster You’ll Need for Your Roofing Project
If you’re redoing your roof then you’ll need a roll off dumpster to dispose of the debris, but before you do there are a few things you may want to have in mind. Before calling us for a free quote on your dumpster rental, you should try to have a rough idea of how many pounds of materials you’ll be putting in the dumpster. If you’re unsure of the volume, we always advise a larger side – this will save you money if you do end up with more than debris you initially thought you had.
Keep reading below for more information that will help your roofing project go smoothly.
Finding the Right Size Dumpster
In order to find the right size dumpster for your roofing material, you’ll need an idea of how many squares are on your roof. One square equals three bundles of shingles – which covers about 100 square feet. Typically, each square of three-tab shingles weigh around 250 lbs. Keep in mind, architectural squares weigh more – around 360 lbs. If you’re not sure you can ask your roofing company how many squares they are putting up.
Do You Have Multiple Layers?
Finding out if you have multiple layers will potentially help you avoid an issue down the road. You should discuss this probability with your roofer – if you do have multiple layers this could add more weight to the debris of your dumpster. In short if you have 20 squares of roofing with two layers coming off, you’ll want to rent a dumpster that can handle 40 squares (40 squares x 250 lbs = 1000 lbs).
Below is an estimate of the dumpster sizes and number of squares they can handle.
30 Yard Dumpster: 90 Squares
20 Yard Dumpster: 60 Squares
15 Yard Dumpster: 45 Squares
10 Yard Dumpster: 30 Squares
We advise based on the amount of debris you have, however if you’re still having trouble figuring out the number we will base it off of the size of your roof. For example, if you have a one story cottage style home, a 10 Yard Dumpster will likely work for you.
