Follow These Simple Steps to Declutter Your Kitchen

1. Walk Around With a Small Bin

To begin, put everything that doesn’t belong in your kitchen in a bin. There’s a good chance miscellaneous items that don’t belong in your kitchen ended up on your counters.

2. Put Everything Back In Place

Once you have items in the bin, put them in their correct storage places. Then take a look at your counters, kitchen table and the island to put everything back into place. Is there an item that is constantly put into the wrong spot? Find a more convenient storage space for it!

3. Divide the Kitchen into Zones

It’s a good idea to divide your kitchen into zones so you can avoid a potentially bigger mess. By assigning zones it can improve your organization. It doesn’t matter if you start with your refrigerator or your pantry, just stick to the zones!

4. Remove and Rehome

As you’re de-cluttering your kitchen, consider donating or throwing away items that you haven’t used in a while. If you do decide to keep an item you don’t frequently use, consider storing it in another room in your house. Take a look at your pots and pans. Do you have any duplicates? If you do, and it serves a special purpose, then keep it. If not, it’s a good idea to donate any pots and pans you no longer need. Plastic storage containers are notorious for taking up space in drawers. An easy way to organize is to start with the lids. Match up every lid with a bottom. If you have any left over, ditch them. Consider taking extra containers and placing them somewhere outside the kitchen in case you need them for special occasions.

Re-home any items that are not stored in the most convenient place. For example, your knives should be kept close to where you chop and prepare food. Oven mitts and potholders should be stored near the stove. It may take a little getting used to if you’ve been living with your current kitchen arrangement for many years, but if you re-home items to sensible places the adjustment should be minimal and your new setup should feel more natural.
